All my clients seem happy and always return to me but any time I do my Mothers nails as extensions she complains that they are too thick,,,, she then seen a tech in our local tanning salon put tips on and then just gel polish straight about. Very few things are more satisfying and relaxing for me than a nail salon trip for a fresh set of acrylic nails. From picking a nail polish color to the buzzing sound of the electric nail drill smoothing out any roughness on my nail, and, of course, walking away with a set of freshly coated nails to tap, tap, tap on every surface I pass.

What do you do when you want the look of long acrylic nails without the risk or damage? Enter: gel nail extensions.

What separates gel and acrylics nails is the structure of the nail. An acrylic tip is made of plastic and requires a monomer liquid and polymer powder to create the sculpted nail. Think press-on—sans nail glue—but more durable and versatile. Gel nails are a healthier alternative to acrylic nails; they are quicker to apply and even quicker to remove—damage free. Although the pandemic has forced many people to channel their inner nail artist until salons are entirely safe and operating, Seney recommends resisting the urge to do gel extensions yourself until you can see a professional.

When you get acrylic tips, the removal process involves drilling, soaking, and filing. With gel extensions, you remove them by simply soaking your nails in acetone, and the gel tips dissolve.

Once that adheres, hard or structure gel is applied all over the nail from the tip to the cuticle and then cured under a lamp," she explains. The rest of your process will flow like a regular gel mani: your color is applied with standard soft gel polish and cured layer by layer. If you're getting nail art, your artist will decorate your tips, and then your nails are sealed with a gel top coat.

If you're looking to get a fresh set of extensions by a pro or on your own, prepare to spend at least one hour in the chair, Edwards says. If you're getting nail art, that takes up some time, too," she says. How Are They Removed? When applied correctly, gel extensions should last between weeks or more depending on how much you hate the grown-out look.

But to preserve the health and strength of your natural nail, the removal process is crucial. Just because gel polish is being used, doesn't mean your extensions can be soaked off like a regular UV-light manicure.

To remove them you need to completely break through the top seal which requires a professional nail drill," she says. Edwards recommends giving your nails enough time to start growing out before deciding to have them completely removed. It's a process that can weaken the nail so let them grow out or get a fill. Your manicurist should buff and drill down where growth appears on the nail so that the surface is smooth.

Then, more gel is applied and cured on the freshly-buffed tip. Are They Safe? Most nail enhancements raise the question of safety — and this technique is no different.
