Over the years many companies have entered the field, some successfully, while others have realised that it is a minefield: to be too prescriptive about how men could and should wear make-up, after all, ignores centuries of history and just as much of a war surrounding gender politics, the fragility of modern masculinity and the increasingly widespread civil rights movement for transgender and nonbinary men, women and people who identify as something else entirely.
Enter War Paint: a young British brand who recently posted a new advert for their latest range of products. So, as the hate piled on, I asked them if they wanted to talk. I asked them if they wanted to discuss, with a journalist, the fire and the fury.
They said yes. Based on the email interactions I had, it seems as if the attempts to move Daniel front and centre to take on media requests, following the earlier controversy, had been fraught.
I wanted to ask him about the backlash and the company wanted to talk about the brand. We did both. He is — and this is something of the point for War Paint — not a man who was trying to play with gender norms or explore androgyny: he was doing it because he was bullied for his appearance. That's how much I struggled. War Paint is not interested, particularly, in accommodating a version of masculinity that includes gender nonconforming or femme men.
That, I would argue, was not how their advertising sold them. It seemed to many viewers — and this was what I presented to them when we spoke — that it was saying that the femininity of make-up was to be pushed aside and it needs to be rediscovered as something worthwhile for a type of metrosexual masculinity that should have died in the early noughties.
